BACKGROUND

The MOONMARS workshop is a result of last year's Space Generation Summit at the World Space Congress. This in itself was a major follow-on conference to the Space Generation Forum (SGF) held at UNISPACE III in 1999. Delegates built on previous SGF recommendations, and generated new ideas for projects to accelerate humanity's pace in space. The topics discussed included the most relevant and challenging questions facing the international space community: future human exploration of the Moon and Mars, search for extraterrestrial life, the weaponszation of space, using space to improve life on Earth, and bringing space to the public through entertainment and tourism. The results of these discussions were presented to the IAF/AIAA in 13 technical papers, and may be found in the SGS Technical Report.

The creation of an annual MOONMARS workshop for the world's youth was the single final recommendation presented to the Space Generation Summit in Houston by the Space Exploration Forum Group.
This year another Space Generation Congress will be held at Bremen and MOONMARS workshop participants will form the first forum dedicated to MOONMARS exploration plans within the framework of the SGS. Deledates will share accommodation and social events with SGS delegates. This is a fantastic opportunity for our 60 delegates to also meet another 200 enthusiastic young space professionals and to hear their recommendations on a broader range of space subjects.

TO THE MOON AND MARS IN OUR GENERATION

Major Space Agencies around the world have recently announced their interest in returning humans to the Moon as a possible stepping-stone towards Mars, and eventually beyond. Many ideas, missions and concepts being considered emphasise a combined MOONMARS exploration strategy for humans, rather than focusing on one destination or the other. Given that such missions will not take place for several years to come and will take even more years to complete, future generations will feel the impact from decisions made today. It is therefore essential for the planners to consider input from the world's youth now.

This intensive 3-day MOONMARS Workshop will provide the opportunity for youth delegates from around the world to meet in person with experts in the field to discuss the topic in-depth. With expert consultation, a meaningful and unified youth perspective on ongoing and future initiatives related to MOONMARS exploration will be produced and presented to world space leaders and other enthusiasts at the International Astronautics Congress immediately following the workshop.

Delegates, were expected to contribute strongly to on-line preparatory work and background reading in the weeks leading up to the workshop. During the actual workshop, delegates participated in small working groups tasked to evaluate and provide recommendations with respect to 9 key areas of input for current MoonMars exploration strategies. In addition to each working group presenting their results to the IAC, final reports will be distributed to Governments, Space Agencies, the Space Generation Advisory Council, various advocacy groups and other persons/organizations in the field identified during the course of the workshop.
